Senior writer Jason DeParle's gritty Sunday magazine story includes the
cover line: "Welfare reform has transformed the lives of inner-city
women." But in 1996 DeParle lambasted it: Having sought office with the aim
of a redefined social contract--health care for every American--he will be
seeking re-election with a bill that begrudges poor infants their Pampers."

Peter Kilborn sees hunger in America: “The U.S. Conference of Mayors
reported in December that in a survey of 25 cities, the number of requests for
free food last year exceeded the 2001 average by 19 percent.” Kilborn doesn’t
mention the Mayors have said that 16 years in a row.
