• July 15 -- “Unpopular” Ashcroft? Only At The Times
Adam Nagourney’s profile of Democratic presidential candidates claims Attorney General John Ashcroft is an “unpopular” and polarizing figure nationwide. But while many Democrats don’t care for John Ashcroft, a poll shows the public at large does.

• June 3 -- The Times' Assumed Innocence
In "For Jailed Immigrants, a Presumption of Guilt," Adam Liptak argues the Sept. 11 attacks "inverted the foundation principles of the American legal system." Yet virtually all those detained had broken America's immigration laws by being in the U.S. illegally.

• May 16 -- Bush Policy “Did the Terrorists a Favor”
Much-criticized columnist Paul Krugman has stopped talking down Bush’s tax plan in order to bash Bush’s terrorism strategy—with about equal effectiveness.

• May 14 -- Maureen Dowd’s Dishonest Deletion
Columnist Maureen Dowd purposely mangles a quote from President Bush to make him look wrong about the dangers posed by Al Qaeda terrorists—all so she can accuse the administration of “lulling triumphalism” in the war on terror.

• May 12 -- Karl Rove’s “October Surprise”?
Dredging up the “October Surprise” canard, editorial writer Francis Clines suggests the 2004 Bush campaign may purposely heighten terrorism fears for the sake of reelection.

• March 24 -- 9/11, Baghdad: Same Thing?
“Baghdad Bombing Brings Back Memories of 9/11” by David Chen likened the World Trade Center terrorist attack to the U.S. bombing of Baghdad. “[Some] could not help thinking about Sept. 11, and how New York, too, was once under assault from the skies.”

• March 12 -- Toying With Anti-Ashcroft Paranoia
Charles McGrath wrote about the annual Toy Fair for the Times Sunday magazine, where he found wireless teddy bears, dolls that make rude armpit sounds-and latent McCarthyism: "Had it been available, the [spy] stuff would have sold like crazy during the McCarthy era....A country where parents and children want to play at investigating one another is a country that was bound, sooner or later, to wind up with a John Ashcroft."
