Sheryl Gay Stolberg

• November 22 -- Poor, "Poignant" Tom Daschle
Pity poor Tom: "In the Senate, the Democratic leader, Tom Daschle of South Dakota, who lost his re-election bid, delivered a poignant farewell speech that brought him a standing ovation…The scant Republican showing provoked Senator Frank R. Lautenberg, Democrat of New Jersey, to speak out….Outside the Senate chamber, the common ground Mr. Daschle spoke of seemed hard to find."

Sheryl Gay Stolberg throws another softball to a Republican critical of Bush, liberal Sen. Lincoln Chafee: "Pensive and intellectual, he hardly appears suited for the bare-knuckle world of politics and seems to exist on the periphery of things, ambling about the Capitol like an absent-minded professor making a study of its power-hungry inhabitants."

• September 9 -- Not-So-Straight Shooters at the Times
Is the assault weapons ban popular or not? Don't ask the Times.

Congressional reporter Sheryl Gay Stolberg departs from her usual laudatory tone in a profile of "traitor" Democratic Sen. Zell Miller, who's giving the keynote speech tonight for Bush.

• September 1 -- "Ruthless" Rudy Attacks Kerry
A day late, the Times jumps on Rudy Giuliani's "ruthless" Monday night "pummeling" of John Kerry. One headline: "Loves Dogs, Hates Kerry: A Two-Prong Campaign Tactic." Another line: "The Bush strategy is to vilify Kerry. Compassionately."

• August 11 -- Another "Independent-Minded" Bush Critic
Reporter Sheryl Gay Stolberg praises yet another moderate Republican senator, and frequent Bush critic, Sen. Susan Collins: "Independent-minded but cautious…with her pleasant demeanor and penchant for being well prepared…."

• August 2 -- Republicans "Looked Like Bullies" Against Daschle
Sheryl Gay Stolberg writes another fawning piece on Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle's fight to retain his Senate seat in South Dakota: "'Lightweight' is not an expression anyone would use to describe Tom Daschle….Daschle is gentle and soft-spoken....The Democratic leader wound up looking like a victim; the Republicans, like bullies."

• July 28 -- "Feisty" Teresa Heinz Kerry
The Times soft-pedals the controversy over Teresa Heinz Kerry's "feisty comments."

The Times has an amusing take on the photograph of John Kerry in blue: "The resulting photo made him look like the sperm played by Woody Allen in 'Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex but Were Afraid to Ask.'"

• July 7 -- The "Relentlessly Upbeat" John Edwards?
Does this sound like Reagan to you? "We will say no to kids going hungry, to kids who don't have the clothes to keep them warm, and no forever to any American working full-time and living in poverty. Not in our America!"

• June 15 -- The Times To Bush: You're No Ronald Reagan

Sheryl Gay Stolberg's latest valentine to Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle ponders the propriety of Sen. Bill Frist actually (horrors!) campaigning against Daschle.

Sheryl Gay Stolberg and Felicia Lee report on a controversy over Bush's nominee for U.S. archivist Allen Weinstein: "He has long been controversial among historians, in part because of his conclusion in his 1978 book, 'Perjury: The Hiss-Chambers Case,' that Hiss was indeed a Communist spy." Actually, the only "controversy" about Hiss' guilt these days is among left-wingers.

• April 2 -- "Nonpolitical" WTC Widows

• March 19 -- “Unavoidable” McCain, Avoidable Zell
Reporter Todd Purdum related with relish on the front page how Sen. John McCain proclaimed on morning TV that John Kerry was not “quote, weak on defense.” Utterly left out: any Republican outrage. This is not how Sen. Zell Miller was treated for his friendship with George W. Bush.

• March 4 -- "My Heroes Have Always Been…" Senate Democratic Leaders?
Sheryl Gay Stolberg, who recently called Democratic Senate leader (and Limbaugh-basher) Tom Daschle "soft-spoken" and "decent," uses a whirlwind gun vote in Congress to spin the liberal leader into a legislative hero: "When the gunfight--or rather, the fight over guns--finished in the Senate on Tuesday, it seemed as if Senator Tom Daschle, the Democratic leader, was the last man standing."

Rush Limbaugh and fans may disagree.

• December 1 -- "Rising Incivility" in Congress: Blame Gingrich
Sheryl Gay Stolberg laments "Rising Incivility on Capitol Hill" and finds that it's (of course) Newt Gingrich's fault: "The old social order of the House was overturned in 1994, when Republicans, led by Representative Newt Gingrich of Georgia, wrested control of the chamber from Democrats after 40 years....the tensions spread to the Senate as House members trained in Mr. Gingrich's bare-knuckles style won election there."
