• June 16 -- Soft Money Double Standards: Gunning for the NRA, but Silent on Soros
Reporter James Dao puts the NRA on the defensive: "In a direct challenge to federal limits on political advocacy, the National Rifle Association plans to begin broadcasting a daily radio program on Thursday to provide news and pro-gun commentary to 400,000 listeners." Few such worries have accompanied Times reporting on left-wing billionaire George Soros and the political organizations he set up solely to beat Bush in 2004. Also: Do only Republicans use "soft money"?

• January 27 -- Beware of Bush Unbound
A rundown of seven anti-Bush books makes the cover of the Times Book Review: "Three years into the presidency of George W. Bush, many people here and abroad fear and loathe our country, its power, its policies, its pride. Is America an evil empire?"
