Patriotism

• September 30
-- Bush
Admin Called Critics "Unpatriotic"…When, Exactly?
The Times editorializes on a Tony Blair speech defending the Iraq
war: "…at least the words 'apologize' and 'wrong' were put on record, and
his critics were not called unpatriotic."
• September 27 -- Democratic
Patriotism Under Attack, As Usual
Adam Nagourney and Robin Toner pass on as credible liberal complaints that
Republicans are questioning the patriotism of Democrats.
• August 30 -- Are
Swifties Questioning Kerry's Patriotism?
Todd Purdum rehashes an old chestnut of Republicans questioning Democratic
patriotism: "But the old culture wars followed [Kerry] into the 21st
century, and he now finds himself bombarded by veterans who question not only
his patriotism but his honor."
• August 10 -- Bush-Hating
Krugman: "It Scares Me Sometimes How Blind People Are."
Times columnist (and professional Bush-basher) Paul Krugman gives
interviews to a couple of left-wing groups--and free reign to his Bush hate.
• June 4 -- John
Kerry, "Patriot With a Different View"
Robin Toner lets the flag-waving Kerry campaign accuse Republicans (without
evidence) of questioning his patriotism.
• February 4 -- "Striking
Contrasts" Between Bush and Kerry
As Sen. John Kerry piles up Democratic primary victories, "Military Service
Becomes Issue in Bush-Kerry Race" frames a potential Kerry-Bush contest to
Kerry's advantage.
• January 28 -- Questioning
Kerry's Patriotism
David Halbfinger on Sen. John Kerry's raucous New Hampshire victory speech:
"This was a martial-sounding speech from a Democrat whose rationale for his
own electability--that he is best prepared to withstand an expected assault on
his patriotism by Republicans in a general election--has always begun with and
come back to his service in Vietnam." What assaults?

• December 16 -- The
First Refuge of a Scoundrel
Accusing Republicans of slandering Democrats as unpatriotic is one of Paul
Krugman's favorite pieces of anti-conservative boilerplate, and his latest
attempt is particularly strained.
• October
22 -- Christian General Biased, Notes
Anti-Semitic PM
A Times editorial calls for the firing of Lt. Gen. William Boykin for remarks he
made to a church group--and cites as credible criticism from Malaysia's
anti-Jewish prime minister.
• June 16 --
Defending Democrats Against Non-Existent Attacks
Sheryl Gay Stolberg and Adam Nagourney focus on Democratic attempts to use
the hunt for Iraq’s WMD as an electoral weapon against Bush, while warning
“Republicans were quick to try to paint Democrats as unpatriotic for raising
such questions.” But they offer no evidence.
