Liberal Bias

• November 2 -- For
Democrats, Times "Looms Larger Than Life"
In the liberal New Republic magazine, Michelle Cottle finds Democrats
who admit to holding the Times in high regard: "For these folks, the
paper of record looms larger than life."
• October 4 -- Reporters
Cackled Over Bush's Debate Performance
Jim Rutenberg's front-page story on the post-debate spin game peeks into the
mindset of the reporters watching: "The loudest cackles among the reporters
covering the first presidential debate broke out at about 9:55 on Thursday night
in a vast, mirrored filing center at the University of Miami, where important
impressions of the candidates' performance were just beginning to gel. And
President Bush was on the receiving end."
• September 22 -- Mary,
Mary, Best be Wary
Is CBS throwing veteran producer Mary Mapes overboard in Memogate's wake?
• September 17 -- The
Times on Discredited Dan Rather
Jim Rutenberg focuses on Dan Rather and CBS's discredited anti-Bush
"memos," running down Rather's past conflicts with conservatives and
finds that even some at CBS are dubious of the anchor's latest
"scoop."
• September 15
-- Stanley
Doubts Anti-Republican Discrimination in Hollywood
Are Republicans discriminated against in Hollywood? Alessandra Stanley
doubts it: "If there is a blacklist, where is the sign-up sheet? There is
no studio ban on Republicans, of course, but certain conservatives have been
dining out for decades on what they describe as a Hollywood witch hunt."
• August 16 -- Reporter,
Heal Thyself
Deborah Solomon questions Yale economist Ray Fair about his computer model of
the presidential election, which predicts an easy Bush victory: “Are you a
Republican?” When he says he supports Kerry, Solomon says: “I’m a little
surprised, because your predictions implicit lend support to Bush.” Hmm. Is
Solomon saying one’s personal political biases inevitably affect one’s
professional work?
• August 2 -- NYT
Columnist Finds Huge Bias for Kerry Among Reporters
Columnist John Tierney finds enormous liberal bias among reporters at the
Democratic convention: "When asked who would be a better president, the
journalists from outside the Beltway picked Mr. Kerry 3 to 1, and the ones from
Washington favored him 12 to 1. Those results jibe with previous surveys over
the past two decades showing that journalists tend to be Democrats, especially
the ones based in Washington."
• July 26 -- "Is
the New York Times a Liberal Newspaper? Of Course It Is."
Daniel Okrent, the Times' "public editor," probably didn't
make himself very popular in the newsroom when he admitted the obvious
yesterday.
• May 28 -- Paul
Krugman Takes on "Tyranny of Evenhandedness"
Paul Krugman's latest column is a broadside against the "tyranny of
evenhandedness" that makes liberal journalists say nice things about
conservatives.
• May 26 -- NYT
Giving Liberal Readership What It Wants
A new survey singles out the Times as the national daily news
organization most often mentioned by journalists as having a liberal point of
view, and the Sunday letter section brought more proof the Times serves
as a reliable home base for liberals.
• March 12 -- Jayson
Blair Accuses the Times of "Anti-Conservative" Bias
Jayson Blair goes on Bill O'Reilly's show and charges the Times with
a "pro-liberal, anti-conservative social change agenda."
• March 2 -- Pointing
Out Liberal Bias = "Lobbing a Grenade"
David Carr's article on Myrna Blyth's new book on liberal fear-mongering in
women's magazines smacks of overkill: "But after her decision to throw a
grenade over her shoulder upon leaving an industry she was very much a part of
for more than three decades, many in her former cohort see her as traitorous and
self-interested."
• January 30 -- Critics
of Liberal Bias Should "Get Out More"
In her review of Dennis Miller's new talk
show, Alessandra Stanley wonders how conservatives can possibly complain about
liberal bias: "Conservatives in Hollywood and New York always complain
about stigma and persecution in the media and entertainment worlds, which makes
one wonder why they don't get out more."

• August 6 -- Times Bias Takes To
the Air
The Times picked the wrong guy to review "Nuclear Nightmare,” their
co-production (with the Discovery Channel) on North Korea’s nuclear program.
• August 1 --
Times
Editor Admits To Media Bias…On the Right
Editorial page editor Gail Collins: “The right in this country has been so
much more successful in developing over recent years an advocacy media, a media
that doesn’t try to be objective, a media that tries to push its own agenda.”
•
July 28 --
Huge Study Confirms Bias at the
Times
A huge study of newspaper political coverage from Reagan to Bush II finds:
“The New York Times displayed a tilt toward the Democrats….The evidence suggests
that the Times tilts somewhat toward the Democrats, particularly in its
Congressional coverage.”
• April
23 -- The Times “Public Lives” of Liberals
Of the last 20 editions of the Times personality profile “Public Lives,”
five have provided unedited liberal advocacy, while the only one featuring a
right-leaning personality was also the only one critical of its subject.
• April 22 --
Physician, Heal
Thyself
Times editorial page editor Gail Collins says: “It is really important for the
journalistic community to decide how to separate opinions from news.” Fair
enough--except the only “news advocate” she names is Rush Limbaugh.
• April 8 --
The New York Times:
Baghdad’s Favorite (Mis)Information Source?
After hearing Iraq’s “information minister” say U.S. troops had been driven
from Baghdad’s airport, Fox’s Brit Hume wondered if he’d read it in the Times.
• April 3 --
The Times
Indecent Proposal
Insight into the Times op-ed picking process from former Secretary of
State Lawrence Eagleburger: “I was told [by the Times] what we want is
criticism of the administration.”
• March 31
--
ABC’s “Impartial
Reporting?”
Alessandra Stanley on war coverage: “ABC and others view impartial reporting as
their contribution to the national good.”
• March 20 --
“Altered” States At The Times
The Times gave left-wing media critic Eric Alterman’s book “What Liberal Media?”
two favorable reviews in less than a week. Today’s thumbs-up came courtesy of
Orville Schell, journalism dean at the University of California at Berkeley and
contributor to the left-wing Nation magazine.
