Neil Lewis

2004

• October 22 -- Bush's Judicial Philosophy Based Purely on "Reaping Political Benefit"?
Neil Lewis' front-page story on Bush's federal puts a cynical spin on the president's judicial philosophy: "There could have been no clearer signal that Mr. Bush intended to follow the pattern set by his father and President Ronald Reagan of shifting the courts rightward and reaping the political benefit of pleasing social conservatives."

• August 25 -- Harping on Overseas Unpopularity of Guantanamo
We get the point, Neil.

• July 28 -- Foxy Republicans
The Times claims Republicans are "Fox's natural constituency."

• February 17 -- Democratic Whistleblowers, Republican Villains
Neil Lewis sounds indignant over Republican Senate staffers who obtained Democratic memos: "But the Democrats have now confidently gathered in a herd on the moral high ground….Faced with a difficult-to-defend situation, many Republicans simply withdrew from the field of battle, quietly slipping out of the room." The Times hasn't always been so judgmental about partisan use of improperly obtained information.

• December 1 8 -- Well Boo-Frickity-Hoo
"Taliban Detainee Is Depressed, Lawyer Says"

• November 14 -- Quoting Zell Only When Liberals Yell
The Times won't report Democratic Sen. Zell Miller's excoriation of his party over the Senate Intelligence memo, but quotes him to try and make conservatives look bad.

October 20 -- Brownout on Fact-Checking
Neil Lewis asserts Bush nominee Judge Janice Rogers Brown "would be the first black woman to sit on the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia." That probably comes as a surprise to Judith Rogers, a black judge who currently sits on the court.

• July 31 -- Conservatives vs. Tolerance, Naturally
Reporter Neil Lewis pits conservatives vs. “tolerance” on the subject of gay marriage.
