David Kirkpatrick

2004

• November 17 -- Religious Right, but "Religious Left"
David Kirkpatrick mulls post-election religious grumbling among Democrats: "Some Democrats are scrambling to shake off their secular image, stepping up efforts to organize the 'religious left' and debating changes to how they approach the cultural flashpoints of same-sex marriage and abortion." But why the quote marks around "religious left"?

• November 4 -- Overdosing Again on "Conservatives"
David Kirkpatrick continues his label-happy conservative beat reporting.

• November 2 -- More Conservative Christian Conservatives

How can an evangelical conservative get a respectful hearing in the New York Times? Criticize Bush.

September 8 -- Republicans "Condemning Gay Parents"
David Kirkpatrick says the Republican platform "condemns gay parents."

• September 1 -- The Republican's "Evangelical" Staging
David Kirkpatrick files another label-heavy story about social conservative influence in the Republican party: "Senator Brownback urged a crowd of several hundred in a packed ballroom of the Waldorf-Astoria hotel, reprising a theme of a speech by Patrick J. Buchanan from the podium of the 1992 Republican convention that many political experts say alienated moderate voters in that election….at times the staging of the evening resembled an evangelical Protestant church service."

• August 30 -- The Lead Convention Story So Far: Left-Wing Gripes

• August 26 -- Did We Mention That They're Conservative?
David Kirkpatrick reviews the Republican Party's platform committee and overdoses on the term "conservative."

• August 9 -- David Kirkpatrick's Churchgoing Habit
Another month, another story by David Kirkpatrick on the propriety of conservative churches voicing support for the Bush campaign.

• August 3 -- One Post-Convention Poll Finding the NYT Likes
"Republicans are fighting back to retain the allegiance of the country's veterans," David Kirkpatrick claims in a story introduced by the loaded subhead "Democratic Push Makes Big Inroads."

• July 12 -- "Under Pressure from Conservatives…."
The Times puts its standard stamp on the gay rights issue in a front-page story by Adam Nagourney and David Kirkpatrick: "…under pressure from conservatives, President Bush is escalating his support for a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage." Are Democrats never "pressured by liberals?"

• June 14 -- Making Room for Anti-Bush Barry
David Kirkpatrick pens another unflattering story on Bush and religious conservatives and gives more space to Barry Lynn, who has a steady job supplying anti-Bush quotes to Kirkpatrick.

• June 3 -- "Americans United" to Beat Bush
A front-page story by David Kirkpatrick puts the Bush campaign on the defensive over a campaign email asking for help from religious congregations--a revelation that appeared the day before on a liberal group's website.

• May 17 -- Still No Liberals in the Gay Marriage Debate
Sunday's front-page sports a story by conservative beat reporter David Kirkpatrick on the apparent lack of interest that conservative religious activists have shown regarding a proposed constitutional ban on gay marriage.

• March 29 -- Labeling Bias Not "Left Behind"

Conservative beat reporter David Kirkpatrick actually conducts a non-hostile interview with Judge Roy Moore, the Ten Commandments judge, for the Sunday Week in Review.

• March 1 -- Uneducated Southern Fundies Against Gay Marriage?
David Kirkpatrick finds a Michigan evangelical community not particularly opposed to gay marriage. Is it because people are just more educated up North?

• February 25 -- Married to the Conservative Label
Robin Toner's analysis of Bush's gay marriage amendment announcement mentions "conservative" 17 times and suggests a constitutional amendment may alienate centrists. Yet the Times own poll shows such an amendment has centrist appeal.

• January 29 -- The Times Discovers New Species: Conservatus Republicus
Conservative media denizens reacted with bemusement to the news that the Times is starting a "conservative beat." Times Editor Bill Keller admits in an interview: "We haven’t always had a real three-dimensional understanding of where conservative activists are coming from."

• November 24 -- Krugman's Cover Story

• November 24 -- Pulitzer Punts on Duranty's Prize, Satisfying Sulzberger
The Pulitzer Prize board decided not to revoke Stalinist Times reporter Walter Duranty's 1932 prize, leading relieved publisher Arthur Sulzberger Jr. to say: "We respect and commend the Pulitzer board for its decision on this complex and sensitive issue."
