James Dao

2004

• November 2 -- Democrats "To Insure Voters Are Not Intimidated"
James Dao and Adam Liptak's front-page story passes along Democratic accusations of vote suppression: "In Florida, Republicans have said they will challenge 1,700 people with felons convictions if they show up to vote. Democrats have mustered thousands of poll watchers whose job will be to ensure that voters are not intimidated."

• September 29 -- Still No Liberals for Gay Marriage
Sarah Kershaw and James Dao track the state-to-state prospects of gay marriage bans and pile on the "conservative" labels.

• July 6 -- Good News for Repubs: Dao Thinks They're Doomed
James Dao carries dire news for Ohio Republicans: "The disarray is so great, Democrats contend, that it could hurt President Bush's ability to win Ohio, a pivotal state for the Republicans." Given Dao's track record, should Republicans be worried?

• June 16 -- Soft Money Double Standards: Gunning for the NRA, but Silent on Soros
Reporter James Dao puts the NRA on the defensive: "In a direct challenge to federal limits on political advocacy, the National Rifle Association plans to begin broadcasting a daily radio program on Thursday to provide news and pro-gun commentary to 400,000 listeners." Few such worries have accompanied Times reporting on left-wing billionaire George Soros and the political organizations he set up solely to beat Bush in 2004. Also: Do only Republicans use "soft money"?

• February 27 -- The Imbalanced Book of James
Reporter James Dao reported from the Democrat-dominated state legislature in Annapolis, Maryland, but he couldn’t find any liberal labels, using just the terms “gay rights activists, “ “gay rights advocates,” and “gay rights groups.” But he labeled “conservatives” or “social conservatives” eight times.

• February 12 -- Vote-Deprived D.C. "PR Embarrassment" for Bush?
James Dao sees a potential embarrassment for Bush in a ruling on D.C. voting rights: "[Congressional officials] acknowledged that it could become a public relations embarrassment for the United States, particularly at a time when critics abroad describe the nation as being inclined to ignore international agreements and act unilaterally."

• February 4 -- "Conservatives" vs. "Supporters of Gay Marriage"
James Dao repeats a common Times habit on gay marriage, pitting "conservatives" against plain old "supporters" of gay marriage.

• January 21 -- Loving Higher Taxes in Virginia
James Dao puts his usual chirpy, optimistic spin on Democratic politicians in a profile of Virginia Gov. Mark Warner's push for a tax hike, while letting the tax-raising Democrat call his plan "conservative."
