Robin Toner's front-page story on the decline of the Southern Democrat fingers the civil rights movement.

• July 28 -- Democratic Party's "Proud" Civil Rights Legacy?
Robin Toner and Todd Purdum tell of the Democrats efforts to close ranks: "…the party not only paid tribute to its proud legacy as the advocate of…civil rights." But there's a far less cheery history of the Democratic party's "proud legacy."

• May 24 -- "Inflammatory" Bill Cosby
It's hard for a liberal to offend the Times, but entertainer Bill Cosby's remarks at speech marking the 50th anniversary of Brown vs. Board of Education certainly "inflamed" Felicia Lee.

• May 18 -- Ring-Bearers for Gay Marriage in Massachusetts
"Hundreds of Same-Sex Couples Wed in Massachusetts" is the headline over a huge photo spanning four columns of the Times front page, accompanying a lead story that lets liberal gay advocates compare the gay weddings to the civil rights movement.

• May 18 -- "Civil Rights Leader" Jesse Jackson
Adam Nagourney and Richard Stevenson, in Topeka for the 50th anniversary of Brown vs. Board of Education, call left-wing activist Jesse Jackson a "civil rights leader."

• March 3 -- Marriage Defenders and the Return of George Wallace, Take 2
Another day, another Times columnist conflating traditional marriage supporters with anti-black racists.

• January 16 -- Affirming the NAACP
Lynette Clemetson pens a sympathetic look at the career of Elaine Jones, retiring president of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. While portraying Jones as a fighter against anti-civil rights conservatives, she leaves out unflattering details about Jones' record.

 

• December 9 -- Al Sharpton, "Civil Rights Leader"
"Civil rights leader" Al Sharpton wins a lawsuit. Reporter Thomas Lueck ignores the infamous Tawana Brawley hoax that resulted in Sharpton himself being successfully sued for accusing a prosecutor of rape.

• September 26 -- The New Civil Rights Movement?
Steven Greenhouse gushes over a bus tour for illegal immigrants “inspired by the 1961 freedom rides that sought to integrate buses in the South.”
