Civil Liberties
• November 5
-- The
Patriot Act Threatens Civil Liberties, Again
Michiko Kakutani reviews a law professor's new book on civil liberties in
wartime and finds ominous modern-day parallels (of course): "At a time when
the Patriot Act threatens to curtail civil liberties…."
• September 21 -- Florida
Now, Florida Forever for the Times
The Times editorial page still hasn't recovered from Florida 2000,
and also accuses Bush of "sweeping aside the Constitution."
• August 17 -- The "Campaign Against Political Dissent"?
The Times editorial page Tuesday gets a bit overwrought about the alleged governmental threat to civil liberties: "The F.B.I.'s questioning of protesters is part of a larger campaign against political dissent that has increased sharply since the start of the war on terror."
• August 9 -- Freaked-Out
Librarians vs. Patriot Act
Timothy Egan takes seriously the view of some easily spooked librarians:
"Whether federal agents are monitoring reading habits or not, the newfound
power to do so has already had an effect on how people use their libraries, Ms.
Sheketoff, the library association official, said, citing evidence from fellow
librarians. Many libraries have posted notices saying that because of the law,
they cannot protect the privacy of patrons' reading habits."
• February 24 -- "Abhorrent
Steps" by the Bushies
Foreign editor Ethan Bronner reviews eight anti-Bush books attacking the
administration on civil liberties. Bronner has some issues with the books but
also says: "Many of the steps taken by the administration are wrong, even
abhorrent."
• January 28 -- Bush "Taking Away Civil Liberties"
A Times editorial cries wolf over the Patriot Act and takes an unlikely shot against Bush's tax cuts: "There are better ways to make the country safe….But the money to do such things is in short supply after the president's tax cuts. Taking away civil liberties may not expand Mr. Bush's gaping budget deficit, but its price in lost freedom is more than we can afford."
• January 26 -- Harsh
Ashcroft
Has John Ashcroft used "harsh measures" to combat terrorism? Alan
Cowell takes it as a given.
• July 15 -- “Unpopular” Ashcroft?
Only At The Times
Adam Nagourney’s profile of Democratic presidential
candidates claims Attorney General John Ashcroft is an “unpopular” and
polarizing figure nationwide. But while many Democrats don’t care for John
Ashcroft, a poll shows the public at large does.
