• August 19 -- How
Dare Anyone Cover Charges by Swift Boat Vets
The editorial page goes negative on the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth and
attacks other media for daring to report the story: "The assault is gaining
attention, with Internet and cable television zealots debating combat minutiae
and even whether Mr. Kerry enacted wartime events with his political future in
mind or held secret meetings with Communists."
• June 16 -- Soft
Money Double Standards: Gunning for the NRA, but Silent on Soros
Reporter James Dao puts the NRA on the defensive: "In a direct
challenge to federal limits on political advocacy, the National Rifle
Association plans to begin broadcasting a daily radio program on Thursday to
provide news and pro-gun commentary to 400,000 listeners." Few such worries
have accompanied Times reporting on left-wing billionaire George Soros and the
political organizations he set up solely to beat Bush in 2004. Also: Do only
Republicans use "soft money"?
• June 1 -- No
Democratic Campaign Finance Hypocrites?
Glen Justice's front-page story, "Republicans Rush to Form New Finance
Groups," lets Democrats make a hypocrisy charge against Republicans, but
doesn't point out the hypocrisy on the part of Democrats who once supported bans
on "soft money."

• June 16 -- Sen. Schumer
Non-Scandal Watch
A Times story on Charles Schumer’s 2004 reelection race again fails to
mention the large fines the Federal Election Commission leveled against Schumer
-- an outspoken advocate of campaign-finance reform.
