Book Reviews

2004

• January 27 -- Beware of Bush Unbound
A rundown of seven anti-Bush books makes the cover of the Times Book Review: "Three years into the presidency of George W. Bush, many people here and abroad fear and loathe our country, its power, its policies, its pride. Is America an evil empire?"

• November 11 -- Alan Cowell’s Anti-Cheney Conspiracy
Alan Cowell reviews the book “Modern Jihad” and brings up a liberal conspiracy theory regarding Vice President Dick Cheney’s old company: “Ms. Napoleoni draws a startling comparison with the era of the Crusades against Islamic dominance, arguing that economic imperatives propel the war on terrorism in 2003 as much as they did in the 11th and 12th centuries. (Consider the contracts in Iraq awarded to the Halliburton Company and other United States businesses, and she may have a point.)”

• October 21 -- Mr. Dee Dee Myers Slams Anti-Clinton Book
The credit line to a harshly negative review of an anti-Clinton biography notes reviewer "Todd S Purdum, a Washington correspondent for The Times, covered the Clinton White House." It could have gone on to say, "…and is the husband of former Clinton press secretary Dee Dee Myers."

• September 25 -- The Times vs. “Scurrilous Biographies”…Sometimes
Michiko Kakutani reviews an anti-Clinton biography and doesn’t like it one bit: “Nigel Hamilton's new biography of Bill Clinton represents a sleazy new low in the chronicling of presidential lives. It regurgitates the most scurrilous and unsubstantiated rumors about Mr. Clinton and his wife…” So the Times would never herald a book full of “scurrilous and unsubstantiated rumors” about a president and his wife? Ask Nancy Reagan.

• May 22 -- Q&A with WILLIAM MCGOWAN
Author of “COLORING THE NEWS,” a 2001 book (newly in paperback) which made many direct criticisms of how the quest for “diversity” was corrupting Times reporting. Times Watch talked by phone with Mr. McGowan.

• May 19 -- Loving Sidney
The Times has given former Clinton aide Sidney Blumenthal not one, not two, but three reviews of “The Clinton Wars,” Blumenthal’s 822-page partisan tome defending the Clintons.

• March 20 -- “Altered” States At The Times
The Times gave left-wing media critic Eric Alterman’s book “What Liberal Media?” two favorable reviews in less than a week. Today’s thumbs-up came courtesy of Orville Schell, journalism dean at the University of California at Berkeley and contributor to the left-wing Nation magazine.
